16, 2005 - Compelling Articles In The Works
With all of the site code, featured talent profiles, job/ audition boards,
setting up databases, and other work, we haven't forgotten about our core
content. We have over forty new articles and tutorials in the works, and now
we will reveal four of them (a lot of the articles will be going to Advanced
Model, and most tutorials will be hosted here- many Advanced Model articles
will later be expanded and the enhanced articles will later be posted here,
too). They aren't meant to be controversial or to ruffle any feathers, but
we're sure some of these new features will offend someone out there. We have
some brand new articles coming that should be noted. The first one is titled
"Taking advantage of portfolio networking sites".
The second one is "Taking advantage of model and talent agencies".
The titles are quite literal, and will teach models, talent, photographers,
and the businesses that book them to exploit flaws in the way these things
operate (and yes, the information is quite legal and you can do these things
without the subject knowing it in most cases). Two additional articles for
photographers, which will be here on Independent Modeling and referenced on
Independent Performer, will be articles titled "Perceived
value: The truth about rates and running a profitable professional business"
and "The ten top mistakes in Internet marketing". The
articles are written by photographers who have made Internet marketing work
and have figured out the service rate issues with years of professional experience.
Note that modeling resource and our ally Tampa
Bay Modeling has taken up a core mission to help determine fair
rates in the Tampa Bay market, and we support them in this endeavor (don't
worry, ladies, the web team will get your new site done as soon as things
settle down here). Independent Modeling is going to help photographers deal
with the rampant cancer of the free work (like TFP's) that tend to devalue
the industry as a whole, and we hope to open the eyes of those (who actually
do good work) offering TFP services to help them realize that they can make
money and help the overall industry by charging for their services. As professional
models, we can say that we don't mind paying for quality photography services,
as we are experienced working professionals and realize that paying for good
work is a career investment. Nothing is really free, those that give away
something are getting something out of it, and that might not be a good thing
for careers. You really do get what you pay for.
Going back to portfolio
networking sites, we fully realize that there are serious flaws with current
portfolio networking sites. We will either help them fix those flaws or, if
they continue whatever it is that they are doing, set out to replace them
with full-service balanced modeling resource services. We think we'll just
replace them. Current portfolio networking sites are about as professional
as a school yard, and they do little for working professionals.

The
agency way is no longer the only way of having a professional career as
a model. There is no arguing against common-sense and proven business
practices. Modern professional models think for themselves, network, and
book work both as independent models and by using agencies as one of many
sources of jobs. This is the future of the modeling industry.
