To be a model is to be a self-contained business. You’re an independent contractor, and regardless of if you are agency-represented or not, the bottom line is that, once you find a modeling job lead, you have to book the job on your own, and have to be able to sell the looks that you can bring to the job.
Like any business, you are only as good as the marketing tools that you use. A model is only as good as their portfolio, as their portfolio demonstrates their range of looks and experience to prospective modeling jobs. In the competitive world of modeling, the only way that any model can compete with other professional models is to have marketing tools which are better than those used by the competition is using. The foundation of the marketing of the model is the modeling portfolio, and it is the most important investment that a model can make in their career. Often, the model who books the job is the one with the most professional, most relevant portfolio.
The model who does not invest in their modeling portfolio and the careers marketing tools which extend from that portfolio handicaps, and even cripples, their modeling career. There is no way around this. Additionally, no modeling portfolio photographer who can actually do anything for your career is going to do it for free. It’s an investment.
