Independent Modeling is a resource site for independent and agency-represented models who wish to enhance the marketability of their modeling careers, as well as have an advantage over limited models; those limited models being agency-only models who do not think for themselves, do not invest in their career, and allow modeling agencies to manage them, and to tell them what to do. Other limited models include models who try to put together competent professional modeling portfolios for free, using TFP, and who try to compete against professional models with cheap career tools. The independent models who use Independent Modeling are smart, professional models who know enough that to have an advantage over other models, that they have to invest in their careers. Independent Modeling is NOT a modeling and talent agency, and we do not claim to be. We do not directly refer models into modeling jobs for financial compensation, and do not represent models. Independent Modeling is not intended to be used for any advice, which includes legal advice, and any advice which can only be legally given by a licensed professional in a regulated profession. For information, and reference, only! Use at your own risk.

Tuesday, July 26, 2005 - Safety First

Modeling and a career in the entertainment industry is supposed to be hard, but in the end it's also supposed to be equally rewarding. Well, in some cases it can be a little too hard. What are we talking about? There are some jobs that are better left alone. Yes, it is healthy to the career to say no to some jobs. Independent Modeling, Independent Acting, and Independent Performer will be addressing the jobs that are not good for your career in the coming months, and we will teach talent how to screen offers, set limits, and even how to weigh out when to walk when those professional limits have been crossed. We'll even show you how to make those unprofessionals accountable for what they do (you really don't think that the President or the CEO of a company is going to be the one casting a project and doing it, do you? Most professional companies delegate, and those jerks who do things like sexually harass models DO have to answer to SOMEONE over them). In a related vein, sometimes a project comes along that may pay well but is very risky for your career. It's all about being safe by doing your homework, weighing out the offer, and taking careful notes about everything in the process of booking and working a job. Oh, and before anyone starts to say that it's safer going through an agency, think again. Why do you suppose that, at least here in Florida, that it is a law that talent agencies cannot send talent to questionable jobs? State Statute 468.412 Section 7; (7) No talent agency may send or cause to be sent any person as an employee to any house of ill fame, to any house or place of amusement for immoral purposes, to any place resorted to for the purposes of prostitution, to any place for the modeling or photographing of a minor in the nude in the absence of written permission from the minor's parents or legal guardians, the character of which places the talent agency could have ascertained upon reasonable inquiry. If agencies and bookers were really safer, and there have been no issues in the past, why do you suppose that they had to address it in the state statutes? Foresight? We say hindsight. The truth is that agencies have little leverage that they can use against risky clients other than screening them before sending models and talent to the auditions, and we know that they cannot screen those job prospects any better than the models and talent can! If the client treats the model unprofessionally, what can an agency do about it? Not much. They can refuse to work with them in the future, but the damage is already done and the unprofessional people will just go to another agency for their talent "needs". What do we think? That the safety and accountability that agencies supposedly provide for those that they represent is an illusion most of the time. Safety is never a guarantee, and it is the responsibility of the model and the talent to take steps to make their career as safe as possible regardless of if they book a job through an agency or independently. To assume that someone else is going to go out of their way with your interests in mind is irresponsible. In a recent case, the model took all the precautions, but was still subjected to unprofessional treatment, which goes to show that the risk can be minimized but never eliminated altogether.

In other news, Independent Performer should be up sometime today. We are still updating all of the sites.

The agency way is no longer the only way of having a professional career as a model. There is no arguing against common-sense and proven business practices. Modern professional models think for themselves, network, and book work both as independent models and by using agencies as one of many sources of jobs. This is the future of the modeling industry.
