In the Summer of 2001, a group of models and photographers got together and started to network. Models were figuring out how to network, promote themselves, and book work independently without an agency. One photography company took charge after many of its model clients asked questions about how they could promote their careers without being dependent on an agency. That photography company, Aurora PhotoArts, became our sole sponsor for the first two and a a half years. Independent Modeling began as a simple modeling resource site on September 4, 2001. For the first six months, the aftermath of the September 11 terrorist attacks slowed down development on the site, and updates were slow. In the Summer of 2002, however, a survey revealed that models were using the new site, and it was making a difference. Independent Modeling was upgraded, and a sister site, Independent Acting, was ordered into development. When Independent Acting was launched on November 10, 2002, it was substantially more advanced than Independent Modeling, which was beginning to outgrow its original design. In early 2003, it was apparent that Independent Modeling had outgrown its original design. A total remake of the site began, and new tools were developed. The process of designing the new site took a year, and the site updates slowed down as new features were cobbled onto the existing files. The site became a slight mess. In the Fall of 2003, Independent Acting was upgraded to be compatible with the new Independent Modeling site. The design of Independent Modeling was completed in the Fall of 2003, but it would take another six months to complete the site. It was a massive project, and the existing site was rarely updated because of the work. In March of 2004 Independent Modeling was relaunched. The new site had revolutionary new tools, an advertisement business model, and was several times larger than the original site with over sixty main sections and over a thousand pages of content. The site was designed well, allowing visitors to easily navigate the volumes of information and tools, and it was extremely effective. Independent Modeling partnered with several businesses and other web sites, and a strong industry standard and alliance was formed. In the Spring of 2004, development of Independent Modeling 2006 began. A new web team was assembled to explore possibilities and assemble the new site with the latest web and multimedia tools. On July 1, 2005, this latest version of Independent Modeling launched, and was complete with quick access links to the other sites in our network. The site that you are now on was six months old when it launched, and was designed to keep up with the market for at least five years. In January, 2006, thousands of dollars and uncountable work hours were invested into Independent Modeling and its sister sites. New networks were built, based around top technology and mobile support equipment. Production capability finally caught up to the ambition, and a new era began as the sites began updating at a fast and effecient rate. The new web site platforms, designed to last until at least 2010 and designed with near-term PHP database additions, began to stretch their legs and run. |
