Independent Modeling is a resource site for independent and agency-represented models who wish to enhance the marketability of their modeling careers, as well as have an advantage over limited models; those limited models being agency-only models who do not think for themselves, do not invest in their career, and allow modeling agencies to manage them, and to tell them what to do. Other limited models include models who try to put together competent professional modeling portfolios for free, using TFP, and who try to compete against professional models with cheap career tools. The independent models who use Independent Modeling are smart, professional models who know enough that to have an advantage over other models, that they have to invest in their careers. Independent Modeling is NOT a modeling and talent agency, and we do not claim to be. We do not directly refer models into modeling jobs for financial compensation, and do not represent models. Independent Modeling is not intended to be used for any advice, which includes legal advice, and any advice which can only be legally given by a licensed professional in a regulated profession. Hi!
I was wondering if you could tell me how to find a modeling agency that is hiring models. Thanks!

Hi Stacy,
Agencies do not hire models. They represent them. The agency works for the model and "books" them into work- well, at least that's what is supposed to happen. You have to take model and talent agencies with a grain of salt, simply because of the politics, intense competition, and potential conflicts of interest that exist.
Some think that we tell models that they don't need an agency, and agencies don't work for modeling careers. That is simply not the case. Some models DO need agency representation to book work, as they cannot think for themselves and don't have a business mindset. There's nothing wrong with being just another marketable face. This web site, however, is for the model who wants to make the most of their career. What we really want models to realize is that the modern model has the ability to market, promote their career, and book work on their own. They are not limited to the old agency-only career model; pun intended.
The smart independent model will not only work with agencies, but will work with several to maximize their booking prospects.
So, how do you get those agencies to represent you?
Here are some tips.

1. Find agencies by picking up your phone book or using a search engine to find them in your area. We list Florida agencies on our web site, too, for your convenience (all agencies listed on Independent Modeling are licensed by the State of Florida's Department of business and professional regulation, AKA the DBPR).

2. Make sure that the agency is licensed by the state that you are in. Most agencies in most states are regulated.

3. When submitting to agencies, you can use nothing more than a simple snapshot, but we recommend that you submit a professional composite card instead. Why? A number of reasons, but the top ones would be that you would have a professional first impression and it would be an excellent way to avoid agency photo mill scams. When you mail out your package, include a COVER LETTER and your modeling RESUME. Why do models need resume's? Because it shows a professional work history and makes it convenient to check your references.

4. When meeting the new faces director of an agency, dress casual and without makeup (if you're female, that is- I don't think a male would have issues with wearing makeup- at least I hope not). They need to be able to see your bone structure and unaltered look. Wearing loose, casual clothes enables them to see how your body looks, too. We recommend bringing your modeling portfolio so you can show them your range of looks and demonstrate that you are a marketable model.

Be careful and remember to keep working at getting more than one agency to represent you. Go to it!

The agency way is no longer the only way of having a professional career as a model. There is no arguing against common-sense and proven business practices. Modern professional models think for themselves, network, and book work both as independent models and by using agencies as one of many sources of jobs. This is the future of the modeling industry.
