Independent Modeling is a resource site for independent and agency-represented models who wish to enhance the marketability of their modeling careers, as well as have an advantage over limited models; those limited models being agency-only models who do not think for themselves, do not invest in their career, and allow modeling agencies to manage them, and to tell them what to do. Other limited models include models who try to put together competent professional modeling portfolios for free, using TFP, and who try to compete against professional models with cheap career tools. The independent models who use Independent Modeling are smart, professional models who know enough that to have an advantage over other models, that they have to invest in their careers. Independent Modeling is NOT a modeling and talent agency, and we do not claim to be. We do not directly refer models into modeling jobs for financial compensation, and do not represent models. Independent Modeling is not intended to be used for any advice, which includes legal advice, and any advice which can only be legally given by a licensed professional in a regulated profession. RE: Portfolio HELP

I have been doing TFP with several photographers, and am trying to sort through pictures so I can put together my portfolio book. To be honest, I don't know which ones that I should use. Most of the pictures aren't that good, too. Any easy way to do this? Also, any suggestions on where I can get a book and material for it? Much thanks!

Hi Tiffany,
Ouch. It's really, really tough to build a professional portfolio with TFP. By the time you gather enough quality pictures together to even start your portfolio, it will be time to start all over again because the looks will no longer be current and you won't be able to use them to market your self. Most photographers who offer TFP are trying to build their books, and more often than not this means that they are new to the business, too, and probably will just end up wasting your time. If the photographer is good, demonstrates professional level work, AND is cool with TFP, I say knock yourself out and go for it, but it's highly unlikely that you will find the photographer that you need who will agree to this kind of deal (if you DO find one, send them my way.... I could always use some free pictures if they are good). In a nutshell? You seldom get something for nothing, unless one, some, or all of the parties involved are playing the part of a fool. Models need to realize that good, usable pictures that make them marketable are an investment into their career. Professional photographers, too, need to get paid. They have overhead in the form of bills and expensive equipment. Professional photographers have paid their dues, and they DESERVE to get paid for their skill and hard work. What is the point of working in a profession if you cannot make a living doing it once your skills are professional-level? Would you work for free if you invested your money and time into your career and portfolio? Of course not. You think that model portfolios are expensive to put together? I can guarantee that most photographers have at least TEN times the money invested into their profession, and it takes thousands of hours over years of hard work to develop their skills. See my point? One sure-fire way to annoy any photographer is to ask for TFP. If they offer and their work is good, fine. Jump on it. No one can stay in business, however, and give away the store. Professions just don't work that way. Paying the photographer, however, not only allows them to continue to work in their career, but it also shows professional respect.
We recommend that you save time and invest the small amount of money that it takes to book a professional photographer. That way, you can build your portfolio relatively quickly and you can be assured that most of the pictures will be professional and usable.

The agency way is no longer the only way of having a professional career as a model. There is no arguing against common-sense and proven business practices. Modern professional models think for themselves, network, and book work both as independent models and by using agencies as one of many sources of jobs. This is the future of the modeling industry.
