Independent Modeling is a resource site for independent and agency-represented models who wish to enhance the marketability of their modeling careers, as well as have an advantage over limited models; those limited models being agency-only models who do not think for themselves, do not invest in their career, and allow modeling agencies to manage them, and to tell them what to do. Other limited models include models who try to put together competent professional modeling portfolios for free, using TFP, and who try to compete against professional models with cheap career tools. The independent models who use Independent Modeling are smart, professional models who know enough that to have an advantage over other models, that they have to invest in their careers. Independent Modeling is NOT a modeling and talent agency, and we do not claim to be. We do not directly refer models into modeling jobs for financial compensation, and do not represent models. Independent Modeling is not intended to be used for any advice, which includes legal advice, and any advice which can only be legally given by a licensed professional in a regulated profession. RE: Booking work

Independent Modeling,
I have read over your web site and have a few questions. While your site has lots of interesting information and some things that I find useful, I still am wondering about models who book work without a model agency. As this is not how the modeling industry is supposed to work, I was wondering if you could elaborate on how models book work on their own, how they are supposed to find job leads, and if models actually do book work on their own. My agency told me that real models need agency representation. I have always worked through an agency, and find some of the things and advice on this site to be different to what I am used to.
I think your site is a great thing and I do not believe that the information is meant to mislead any new models. Any response will be appreciated.
Thank you!
Kelly

Kelly, your questions are understandable. Some habits are hard to break and it's not easy to consider other options when you have only been taught one way to do things. What most modeling agencies don't want models to know is that it doesn't take a brain surgeon to be able to find your own job leads and book your own work. Any model is capable of marketing themselves and managing their own career, too. The secret? Well, it's not really a secret. You only have to learn a little about how the modeling industry works, how business works, and then work and think for yourself.
So, DO agencies book you into work? The answer is a simple no. What an agency does is refer you go see's. Does the booker go to the go see with you and land the booking for you? Of course not! Once you are the go see, regardless of if an agency was involved, it's up to you to sell you. The agency merely makes money from the referral once you book the job. Now, there are some that say that an agency lends professional credibility to the models that they refer and can help collect what is owed after the job. While there is truth to this, it doesn't have the weight to make the agency way the only way. Models who conduct themselves as professionals inspire credibility. Additionally, most professional businesses will not have a problem paying you for the job, as long as you keep the lines of communication open and get the terms of the job in writing (hint: every serious model should look into partnering with an attorney and an accountant).
We know of several models who often book work on their own, and it's why they are booking more work than models who sit back and wait for agencies to call them. How do they do it? The information is on our site, and it won't cost you a dime to read through it and learn it. While we are going to have paid membership areas with advanced tools and even more in-depth information, we will always have all the information that you will ever need free of charge on this site.

The agency way is no longer the only way of having a professional career as a model. There is no arguing against common-sense and proven business practices. Modern professional models think for themselves, network, and book work both as independent models and by using agencies as one of many sources of jobs. This is the future of the modeling industry.
